Moving into a student flat ain’t glamorous. The windows rattled in the wind, but we gave it soul with furniture. No student can afford Mayfair prices, so we begged, borrowed and carried. Another dragged a chair from Camden. It felt like Shoreditch, but that’s what made it real. Old accent chairs carry memory, and it doesn’t matter if it’s scratched. I’ve watched half my flat pass out across two chairs, and the sofa store was another character in the story.

Retro furniture feels natural here, and dealers live for it. My flatmate dragged me into Smithers, and everything felt alive, not plastic. we left with just one piece, but it’s become the throne of the house. We’ve all dragged furniture through rain. it’s how you build a home. Armchairs don’t mind if you fall asleep in them. Brand-new looks boring, but vintage carries weight. every dent becomes part of the flat. By the end of the year, the cracked window gets forgotten, but the armchair stays in your mind.

So if you’re moving to London, skip the flat-pack rubbish. Take home something with scars, and let it shout Shoreditch every time you sit.
