About guided tours melbourne
When I first started running Melbourne tours with Autopia Tours a long time ago, I soon discovered this city has facets you can’t find in the brochures. The laneways buzz with buskers, the Yarra River winds across stories that predate Federation, and the nightlife can keep you out later than you planned. Be it short trips from Melbourne, you’ll find a city that’s got culture, grit and beauty in equal measure.
I’ve devoted years wandering through the City of Melbourne, from the business district to the serene greenery of the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, and whenever I wander, I find something new. This blog is my interpretation — part visitor’s manual, part story, part planning tool — for anyone who wants to enjoy Melbourne like a local with dusty boots, not a shiny brochure.
Before we dive into Melbourne’s coffee culture and theatre lights, it’s important to respect the Traditional Owners of the land. The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation have looked after Country here for tens of thousands of years. The Yarra River — or Birrarung as it’s traditionally known — isn’t just a backdrop for joggers and rowing clubs; it’s a living artery, central to creation stories and cultural practice.
Even today, the way the Victorian Government handles the city’s growth, water supply and urban planning is shaped by the river. The city’s very infrastructure, from regional drainage systems to flood protection and water restrictions, all depend on how we interact with Country. Acknowledging that past requires conscious travel — stopping to absorb the traditions, not just snapping the skyline.
